Background

Judy Woodruff has been anchoring and reporting for multiple nationwide news outlets. She graduated after transferring to Duke University from Meredith College. Woodruff took up the hard task of becoming what was known as a "male dominated" job, being an on-air reporter for any TV station. She was tasked to be a correspondent at the White House from 1977-1982. From there, she was able to work her way up being an anchor and correspondent for CNN and later onto other news networks such as NBC and PBS. Her son, Jeffrey, suffered from a minor case Spina Bifida, a condition that causes spine issues. After a failed surgery at the age of 16, Judy's son was unable to stand or speak. She has become an advocate for spreading awareness of the disease.

Impact

Woodruff was one of the beginning and more prominent news commentators in the 1970's. There were almost no women in the TV broadcasting industry, and Judy was able to find her way in and compete on the same level as men did. She worked for many different news organizations and was redefining how women were seen on TV news.
